Wood rot cheats. It starts where you cannot see it and spreads while the house looks perfectly fine from the street. By the time anything shows on the surface, whatever is happening behind the wall is usually a lot worse. Catch it early and you save serious money. So here is what to look for this season, starting from the outside and working in.
Signs You Can Spot Outside
Start with the paint. Bubbling or peeling in patches usually means trouble from behind, because paint fails when moisture pushes through the wood underneath. One weathered spot? Normal. A cluster of bubbles on one section of wall? Water is sitting in there, looking for a way out. Snap a photo so you can tell later whether the patch is growing.
Next, use your thumb. Healthy wood feels solid. Wood that gives under gentle pressure has already started breaking down inside. Check the bottom edges of the siding, the window sills, and the corner trim first, since water pools and lingers at those spots. A screwdriver handle makes a decent tap tester too. Solid wood sounds sharp. Rotting wood sounds dull.
Third, follow the stains. Dark streaks below windows or around trim trace the path water takes on its way out of the wall. Run your eye up the streak and you will often land on the entry point. Cracked caulking, maybe, or a flashing gap up top.
What to Do When You Find One
Found any of those? Do not sit on it through another rainy season. Last thing. Walk the outside of your house twice a year, once after the fall storms and once in spring. Ten minutes with your eyes and your thumb is the cheapest inspection you will ever get.
