If You Plan to Drive Yourself, Read this First

New York has a rule a lot of visitors miss.

Under Brianna’s Law, all operators of motorized vessels must hold a boating safety certificate. It applies regardless of age. The certificate is valid for life, but you have to carry the original with you on board. Kayaks and canoes are exempt for now, though the state still recommends the course.

New York State Parks’ boating page lays out who needs one and how to get it. New York also recognises certificates issued by your home state, which is useful if you are visiting.

None of this applies if you book a captained trip. The crew holds the credentials.
